Description

Camellia japonica 'Spring's Promise' is a cold-hardy hybrid broadleaf evergreen shrub developed by Dr. Clifford R. Parks in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from the cross Camellia japonica 'Berenice Boddy' × Camellia japonica 'Kumasaka', bred for enhanced winter resilience (hardy to -5°F or lower, USDA Zones 6–9). It features small to medium single flowers in rose-red to rosy-red (often described as coral-red or reddish-salmon) with yellow anthers and cream filaments, providing vibrant color against glossy dark green foliage, and occasionally reblooming in fall for added interest. The plant grows 5–8 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide with dense, upright to compact habit and average growth rate, blooming early to mid-spring (typically February–April in cooler northern climates like New Jersey when sheltered, sometimes starting mid-winter in milder areas).
